The Skills Gap Isn't a Talent Problem — It's a Visibility Problem. Atlantic University and Katch Skills Are Solving It.

Atlantic University and Katch Skills launch the Talent & Opportunity Center to upskill workers and connect employers to the talent they need.

description of the center's pilars of work and initiatives.

Work is changing faster than most systems built to prepare people for it. AI is reshaping how tasks get done, how teams are structured, and how value gets created,  and it's happening in real time, across every industry, all at once.

People are learning new skills all the time, and fast — through jobs, side projects, certifications, on-the-job training, YouTube tutorials, life experience. But the systems built to connect that learning to opportunity haven't caught up. A university trying to help a student land a job, or an employer wondering why they hired the wrong person again, keep running into the same wall: a resume or a degree can't actually show what someone can do. The future of work isn't just about skills. It's about visibility — being able to see them.

That's the thinking behind the Talent & Opportunity Center — a joint initiative of Atlantic University and Katch Skills that connects learners, employers, and training providers through one shared system for skills. When we can see what people can actually do, we have a trusted way to hire for it, and a real shot at meeting the demand for talent.

Why One Approach Isn't Enough Anymore: The Heart of the Talent Problem

A platform alone can't shift how a region values talent. A university alone can't build the infrastructure to make skills visible and portable. And an employer alone can't fix a hiring system that's still built around degrees and job titles instead of demonstrated capability.

The Talent & Opportunity Center exists because this moment calls for more than any one of these working in isolation. It pairs a tech solution that's actively defining a new way of valuing talent with the institutional strength and community trust to drive that change where it matters most.

Atlantic University brings deep expertise in technology, workforce education, state of the art facilities, and strong community partnerships — plus a genuine commitment to expanding access to opportunity in Puerto Rico. Katch Skills brings the technology: real-time skills capture, portable skills profiles, workforce analytics, and employer-facing tools that turn learning into proof.

Neither piece works alone. That's the point.

Beyond "Using the Platform" — Building an Ecosystem

We want to be clear about something: this is a story about two organizations co-creating an ecosystem.

A lot of our partners use Katch Skills with their students, and we're grateful for every one of them. But the Talent & Opportunity Center is a different kind of commitment. Atlantic University isn't just handing skills profiles to students — they're helping design the model for how a region captures, understands, and activates skills data at scale.

It's your data. Own it. That principle doesn't stop at the individual learner — it extends to institutions and regions that want a real stake in how their talent story gets told.

Three Pillars, A Stronger Economy

The Center is built on three interconnected pillars. Each one solves a different piece of the workforce transition, and together, they add up to a stronger regional economy.

1. Future Skills Academy — Learning, Upskilling, and Workforce Mobility

This pillar starts with what Atlantic University already does best: excellent curriculum, established programs, and state-of-the-art facilities. The Academy uses that foundation to upskill students on traditional academic paths, but it doesn't stop there. It expands to upskill talent already working at local businesses, and to support people navigating a career transition, whether that's a shift into tech, a return to the workforce, or a move into an entirely new field.

The Academy also looks outward. The Center partners with other businesses, organizations, and programs that bring cutting-edge, on-demand training to the table — the kind that can equip someone with a specific, in-demand skill quickly, not just over the course of a multi-year degree. Every learner captures that growth in real time through Katch Skills, building a living skills profile grounded in demonstrated capability, not just credentials.

2. Talent Ready Employer Lab — Skills-Forward Hiring and Employer Innovation

None of that upskilling sticks without employers who know how to recognize and value it. That's where the Employer Lab comes in.

Led by Katch Skills, the Lab introduces employers to skills-forward hiring practices and gives them direct access to the Katch Skills platform and the talent pool building profiles within it — talent that's a better fit and more likely to stay. Through roundtables, trainings, and networking events, we work closely with employers to understand their real challenges, and help them expand solutions for hiring, upskilling, and reskilling their teams. We also help connect them to the resources — funding, programs, talent, and partnerships — to actually do it.

It's also where we're seeing something powerful start to happen: employers using Katch Skills shareable profiles in their hiring process are making better hires.

3. Skills Intelligence & Regional Strategy Institute — Research, Economic Development, and Systems Leadership

Everything above generates data — and data is where the third pillar comes in. The Institute brings the ecosystem together, using what's happening across the Academy and the Employer Lab to inform other initiatives and economic development priorities across the regions we serve.

This is what makes the Center more than the sum of its parts: real skills data, captured at the individual level, rolled up into insight that can shape regional workforce strategy, funding priorities, and long-term economic development decisions.

What This Means for This Moment

We're at a point where the old playbook — a degree, a resume, a job title — isn't giving employers or learners enough information to navigate a labor market this fast-moving. The skills gap isn't a talent problem. It's a visibility problem.

The Talent & Opportunity Center is our answer to that: a model built on the belief that technology and partnership have to move together, not separately, to meet this moment. Atlantic University isn't just preparing students for the jobs that exist today. Together, we're building the infrastructure for a skills-first economy where capability is visible, portable, and connected to real opportunity — in Puerto Rico, and as a model for what's possible everywhere else.

This is what it takes to make the most of a workforce transition this significant: strong technology, strong institutions, and a shared commitment to making sure talent doesn't go unseen.
