How to Onboard Students to Katch Skills: Step by Step Guide for Career Advisors
Updated: 9 hours ago
Students pick up real skills every day: campus jobs, internships, class projects, club leadership, the podcast they listen to on the way to class. Almost none of it shows up on a transcript or a resume.

The skills gap isn't a talent problem. It's a visibility problem.
This guide walks your career services team through onboarding students to Katch Skills in five steps, from the first invite to their first logged learning.
Step by Step Guide
Step 1: Invite your students through My Katchers
We recommend inviting students directly through the platform so they're connected to your program from the start.
Open your Katch Skills dashboard and go to My Katchers.
Click Invite and paste your students' email addresses. You can add your full list at once.
Each student receives an invitation email. When they click Accept, they register and their Katch Skills account is created.
Tip: Give students a heads up before the invites go out so they know to look for the email and don't mistake it for spam.
Step 2: Have students complete their profile

Once registered, students should head to Settings and fill out two tabs:
Personal Details: their basic information
Career: the roles, industries, and goals they're working toward
A complete profile gives context to everything they log afterward.
Step 3: Build their baseline profile
This is where students discover what they already bring to the table.

In the Profile section on the left side of the dashboard, Students add any job titles they've held in the past. Campus jobs, internships, part time work, and volunteer roles all count.
For each role, Katch Skills asks them to rate their skills, knowledge areas, and tech skills.
Why this matters: Many students underestimate what they already know. The baseline helps them identify their existing superpowers and gives them a clear starting point to grow from.
Step 4: Show them how to log their learning

This is the habit that makes a Katch Skills profile valuable over time. Students can log learning in two ways:
In the Learning Log: They simply write what they did. No special format required.
At Katch Skills partner events: They scan the event QR code to log their attendance and learning.
What counts as learning? More than most students think:
Podcasts and articles
Webinars and online courses
On campus events and workshops
Work projects and internships
Volunteering and club activities
Make it part of every conversation. Each time you meet with a student, ask: "What have you learned since we last talked?" Then have them add it to their Learning Log before they leave. Small, consistent entries build a far stronger profile than one big catch up session at the end of the semester.
Step 5: Share the Katch Skills demo video
Want students to see it in action before they start? Share our demo video:
▶ Watch the demo:
A few easy ways to use it:
Include it in a follow up message after invites go out
Play it at orientation or a career readiness workshop
Add it to your career center's resource page
