How to Set Up an Event in Katch Skills: Instructions and Demo Video
Preview: Event registration that sends every attendee home with a learning log, not just a memory. Here is how to set one up in Katch Skills, step by step.
Every event registration tool on the market does the same job. It collects a name, sends a confirmation, and counts who showed up. The event ends, the attendance number goes in a report, and the people who learned something walk out with a story they will tell once, maybe.
Katch Skills Events now does something no registration tool does. The learning log is built into the registration itself. When you set up the event, Katch Skills maps what people will learn at it. When someone checks in, that learning goes straight into their Learning Journal and onto their skills profile. They leave with their skills, and they keep building on them long after your event is over.
For you as the host, nothing gets harder. Registration, confirmation emails, attendee management and on site check in all run from one place. This guide walks through the whole setup in nine steps.

The video covers every step below in order. If you prefer to read, keep going.
You need three things, and you can have the event published in about ten minutes.
A Katch Skills host account. Sign in at katchskills.ai and open Events in the left menu.
The basics of your event: name, date, time, location and a two or three sentence description of what people will do there.
Optional: your organization's logo or the event graphic for the registration page.
Events are free to attend for now, so there is no payment step to set up.
Set up your event
Step 1: Create the event
In the left menu select Events, then Create Event in the top right. You land on the Event Setup tab of a new draft. Nothing is visible to attendees until you publish in Step 8, so you can save and come back at any point.
Step 2: Name it and describe it
Enter the event name, then write the event description. This description is the single most important field in the setup. Katch Skills reads it in Step 5 to map the learning, so a real paragraph beats a title repeated twice.
Step 3: Set the date, time and location
Choose the timezone, then the start and end date and time. Under Location pick Physical or Online. For in person events add the street address, city, state and ZIP code; the publish checklist in Step 8 will flag it if the address is incomplete. For online events add the meeting link.
Step 4: Open registration
Scroll to the Registration section on the same tab.
Choose a registration open and close date, or leave them blank to keep it open until the event starts.
Add a maximum capacity if space is limited, and turn on the waitlist if you want to keep collecting names after it fills.
Decide whether attendees can see the attendee directory.
Enter the contact email attendees should write to with questions.
Edit the confirmation message and the cancellation policy, or keep the defaults.
Step 5: Map the learning
This is the step that makes a Katch Skills event different from any other registration. Scroll to Learning Mapping and select Generate. Katch Skills reads your description and fills in the Learning Type, Skills, Knowledge and Technology Skills your attendees will build.
Review, add or remove any skills that do not fit, and add any that are missing by typing in the field and choosing from the list. You can also edit the short description if you want a different description for the learning log. Select Save changes.
Everything you confirm here is what lands in each attendee's Learning Journal when they check in. It's the record they take with them.
Step 6: Confirm the event is free
Open the Tickets and Codes tab and confirm Free event is selected. That is the only option for now, so this step takes a few seconds.
Step 7: Brand the registration page and write the confirmation email
On the Registration page tab, upload an event image and your organization's logo. The preview on the right updates as you go and shows exactly what attendees will see when they open your link.
On the Confirmation email tab, write the subject line, the opening message and any event instructions. The preview on the right renders the email for a sample attendee. Every confirmation email includes that attendee's personal check in QR code, so remind people to have it ready at the door.
Step 8: Review and publish
Open Review and Publish. The checklist confirms the date is set, the description is written, the address is complete and registration is enabled. Anything missing shows a Fix it link that takes you back to the right field.
Select Publish. The status changes to Published and your registration link appears. Select Copy link and share it anywhere you already promote events: email, social, your website, a flyer.
Step 9: On the day, check people in
Open the event and go to the Overview tab. Your registration link and the learning log QR code are both there. Select Download QR to print it or show it on a screen at the door.
When the event starts, open the Attendees tab. Search by name or email and select Check In next to each person as they arrive. Attendees who have a Katch Skills profile get the learning log in their Learning Journal the moment you check them in. Attendees without one can scan the QR code, create a profile and claim it.
Only need the QR code to share at an event or with students?
If you have been using Katch Skills to generate learning log QR codes for events you register elsewhere, that still works and nothing about it changed. Create the event, complete Steps 2, 3 and 5, and skip registration. From the events list, select the QR icon next to the event to open the code full screen for a projector, or download it from the Overview tab.
Your existing events and their QR codes are untouched. Open Events and you will see the new tabs next to them.
Three habits that make the learning log better
Write the description for the learning, not the logistics. "A 90 minute hands on session where participants build a project budget in a spreadsheet an present it to the group" maps to budgeting, spreadsheet software and public speaking. "Fall workshop, room 204" maps to nothing.
Review the skills before you publish. Generate gives you a strong first pass.
Say it out loud at the door. Tell people the check in puts the skills on their Katch Skills profile.
Questions we hear most
Do attendees need a Katch Skills profile to register? No. Anyone with the link can register. A profile is what lets the learning log land in their Learning Journal at check in, and they can create one by scanning the QR code at the event.
Can I edit an event after publishing? Yes. Change any field and select Save changes. To take it offline, select Move back to draft on the Review and Publish tab.
Can I charge for an event? Events are free to attend for now.
What does the attendee see? A registration page with your event image, logo, date, location and description, followed by a short form. After registering they receive the confirmation email with their personal check in code.
Where do I see who learned what? The skills mapped in Step 5 appear in each checked in attendee's Learning Journal, and in your organization's skills analytics alongside every other learning source.
